The first day of May is traditionally devoted to workers in Australia and internationally. It is the day that the Church observes the feast of St Joseph the Worker as a way of honouring the intrinsic dignity of those who work and the importance of work in the lives of individuals, families and the entire community. These annual Pastoral Letters repeatedly address the needs of the most vulnerable and the lowest paid in Australian society: the unemployed, casual workers, people on minimum wages, migrant workers.
