
Report Name: Thriving (& Surviving) in Ministry: A Profile of Catholic Clergy in Australia: Health and Wellbeing
Description: This national research report offers a comprehensive picture of the health, wellbeing and lived experience of Catholic clergy in Australia. Drawing on survey responses from 825 priests and deacons, as well as 78 in‑depth interviews conducted across 2024 and 2025, the study provides valuable insight into contemporary realities of ministry.
The report explores clergy wellbeing, ministry and relationships, spiritual and mental health, and the key pressures shaping ministry today. Findings indicate that the overall wellbeing of Australian clergy is generally positive, while also identifying significant challenges, including feelings of overwhelm, stress and anxiety, and the impact of cultural and societal change on confidence in ministry.
Importantly, clergy themselves offer practical suggestions for better support, formation and care. Many also express a deep sense of gratitude for their vocation and ministry, providing a balanced and hopeful picture alongside the challenges.
